Fuel Storage
The smaller fuel canisters and larger refueling tanks should be stored in a different building or complex in order to be more secure. To add more safety, all areas in the vicinity must have "No Smoking" signs are clearly displayed. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a secure enclosure which could only be accessed by authorized personnel. It is very vital for the safety of the operator, as well as everybody they work with, that these safety regulations are strictly followed.

It is also vital to always have a fire extinguisher available at the refueling station. Moreover, anybody who is operating the fueling station must be trained and also must be trained to operate the fire extinguisher effectively and safely. When it comes to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators utilizing a lift truck must be correctly trained. This training covers a classroom portion as well as hands-on training. Once the training sessions have been completed, the person needs to be tested to be able to show that they understand the training materials. A portion of this training also covers the proper method of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also includes site-specific procedures as well as the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they could be driving.
Medical Treatment
MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheets must be situated in all facilities where forklifts are operating. This center will include the MSDSs for all solvents and chemicals which are used on site. This will also include the propane that is used to refuel the unit, together with the acid in the lift truck battery.
MSDSs sheets have to be available for all workers at all times. If any exposure incident occurs for instance, the individual has to be evaluated at once. If any medical attention is needed, to must be given without any delay.
